Mombasa Walking Tour Itinerary: Fort Jesus, Old Town & Spice Market
Exploring Mombasa on foot is the single best way to uncover the rich layers of history that vehicles simply bypass. Here is the curated walking itinerary used by our TripBambika guides.
Stop 1: The Iconic Pembe za Ndovu (Elephant Tusks)
Begin along Moi Avenue at the famous intersecting aluminum elephant tusks built in 1952 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s visit. It serves as the symbolic welcome gate to Mombasa island.
Stop 2: Fort Jesus Museum
Walk down toward Nkrumah Road to enter Fort Jesus. Highlights inside include the Omani house, historical cannons, torture chambers, and artifacts recovered from sunken Portuguese warships in Mombasa bay.
Stop 3: Old Town Cultural Walk
Wind through Ndia Kuu street. Notice how houses were built with coral rag walls and lime plaster to naturally regulate temperature under the tropical coastal sun. Stop by the Mandhry Mosque, one of the oldest operational mosques in East Africa.
Stop 4: Old Dhow Harbour & Spice Shops
Complete the loop at the Old Port overlooking traditional wooden dhows that have sailed across the Indian Ocean to Arabia and India for centuries. Grab freshly ground coastal curry powder before concluding.
