Lamu Island · Kenya Coast

Lamu tours from Mombasa.

A 4-day, 3-night island escape to Lamu Old Town, Shela and the Indian Ocean. Choose to fly direct or travel the scenic overland route — both include the same curated island itinerary.

Lamu is the oldest living Swahili settlement in East Africa — a UNESCO World Heritage island where donkeys outnumber cars, dhow builders work with centuries-old techniques and the Indian Ocean laps against coral-stone streets. TripBambika offers two dedicated 4-day tours to get you there from Mombasa.

Two ways to reach Lamu

Fly-In vs Overland: which should you choose?

The fly-in tour departs from Mombasa Moi International Airport. A 45-minute flight lands you on Manda Island and a private dhow takes you across the channel to Shela. It is the fastest, most comfortable way to reach Lamu and is ideal for travellers with limited time or those who want to maximise their days on the island.

The overland tour departs by luxury coach from Mombasa, travelling through Kilifi, Watamu and Malindi before arriving at Mokowe Jetty on the mainland. A short boat crossing brings you to Shela. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours and passes through the full beauty of the Kenya Coast — mangroves, baobab forests and fishing villages. It is the most affordable way to experience Lamu and suits travellers who enjoy the journey as part of the trip.

Both packages include identical island activities: a private sunset dhow cruise on arrival, a guided Lamu Old Town UNESCO walking tour with an official local guide, a private dhow trip to Matondoni dhow-building village, and a full day of snorkelling, swimming and beach BBQ on Day 3.

Accommodation in Shela

Both tours are based in Shela, the quieter residential quarter of Lamu Island about 3 km from Lamu Town. TripBambika offers eight accommodation options to match different group sizes and preferences — from a private en-suite room with a plunge pool overlooking the dunes to a whole rooftop Swahili house sleeping up to eight. Select your preferred property and the number of travellers when enquiring.
